Member Letter from President, ASIS International

July 1, 2013

Dear ASIS Member:

With your support, ASIS International (ASIS) has grown steadily over the past decade and has evolved to meet the diverse needs of security management professionals worldwide. Like many other professional associations, ASIS must periodically review its operating costs and the anticipated future improvement of benefits, programs, and services. A thorough financial review undertaken by the ASIS Board of Directors has determined a need to implement a dues increase of $45—to $195 annually— effective January 1, 2014. Our dues were last raised in 2003.

Prior to making this decision, the Board thoroughly explored all alternatives to this action, but determined that this is necessary if ASIS is to continue to provide the scope, breadth, and quality of current services, while also building offerings for future generations in the profession. A few of our major membership-related developments since 2003 are:

      o 38,000 members today vs. 33,000 in 2003
      o 45 newly chartered chapters since 2003
o Four Regional Advisory Councils created—Europe, Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Latin America
o Eight new Standards published since program began in 2008
o Eight new Guidelines published since 2003
o CSO Roundtable established to meet the needs of senior security professionals from the largest and most influential organizations in the world
o Two new certifications introduced in 2003—PCI and PSP
o Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East Bureaus opened
o Four global conferences added—New York, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe
o Digital offering of Security Management magazine
o Increased offerings of alternative education delivery systems for members, i.e., webinars

As we move forward, the Board, along with the volunteer leadership and staff, plan to continue to build upon our strategic initiatives and expand the services we provide to the membership globally.

ASIS remains dedicated to the promotion of excellence and leadership in the global community of security management professionals. In line with this commitment, we appreciate your membership and your support.

Sincerely,

Geoff Craighead, CPP

Call for Articles - Chapter Newsletter

Dear Members,

As part of our communications outreach, ASIS International (Singapore Chapter) is committed to producing two Chapter Newsletters each year.

As we approach the end of another year, the Singapore Chapter will be publishing its second newsletter in Dec 13. Other than updating members on past and upcoming events, we will again be publishing security-related articles of interest as part of education and knowledge sharing. The Singapore Chapter is seeking articles of interest from all members, which may relate to terrorism, physical security, executive protection, investigations, product counterfeiting, supply chain security, crisis management or business continuity management. The article may relate to current or emerging issues, best practices or challenges facing security professionals who are responsible for securing people, property and information in their organisations.

This will be a valuable platform to share your knowledge with fellow Chapter members and other security professionals. CPP/PSP/PCI holders will also be pleased to note that published articles may earn them up to 9 CPE credits.

Your article should be submitted in word doc containing no more than 1,000 words, which can be accompanied with illustrations such as diagram and/or photo.

Submissions close on Sat 30 Nov 13. I would like to encourage all members to contribute actively towards "A more connected and learned Chapter".

Regards,

Book of the Quarter: "Potential: Workplace Violence Prevention and Your Organizational Success"

In light of a tragedy that took place at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard yesterday, it reminds us that workplace violence is a day-to-day reality that cannot be ignored. Bill Whitmore, the Chairman, President and CEO of AlliedBarton Security Services, the largest American owned and managed contract security company, wrote this book about workplace violence prevention. Whitmore demonstrates how an organization's leadership can play a crucial role in preventing workplace violence and some of the steps they can take in developing and implementing a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program. According to Whitmore, every organization has to understand the dynamics, risks and costs to their business. Everyone in an organization is responsible for workplace violence prevention. Educating employees about the signs and symptoms of potential workplace violence threats and creating awareness through training is vital to their prevention program.

In addition, Whitmore highlights warning signs for an employee who requires intervention, and as leaders we need to make sure all employees understand and recognize the more subtle forms of workplace violence — the warning signs of potentially destructive acts to come — so that everyone can act as eyes and ears to recognize and report unusual behavior. Education and awareness are critical. The daily interactions of co-workers weigh heavily on the ability to identify potential issues before they become disasters. Hence this book doesn't just address the far end extreme of gun-related violence that is not really suitable in our Singapore context.

Field Visit - The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore

ASIS International (Singapore Chapter) will be hosting its third quarter’s field visit.

Participants will qualify for 2 CPE hours towards CPP, PSP and PCI recertification.

Since the beginning of time, people have travelled for commerce, religion, family, health, immigration, education, and recreation. Evidence of hotels and the hospitality industry have been recorded as far back as biblical times when Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem during the census. As the Bible depicts, Mary and Joseph were refused accommodations because there "was no room at the inn." The word hotel is derived from the French word hôtel, meaning host.

Post September 11, 2011, the aggregate attacks on hotels have increased four-folds. Straddling between security and hospitality is a tight rope that has to be walked everyday. The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore (RCMS) isn’t just another 5 star hotel under the Marriott stable. It is also where heads of states like US President Obama stays when he travels to Singapore. Find out from behind the scenes how RCMS is also instrumental to the National Day Parade and F1 race.

Date: 25th September 2013
Time: 0930 – 1145 hrs
Venue: The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore (Meet at the lobby)

Programme
0930–1000hrs – Registration
1000–1030hrs – Presentation by The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore
1030–1130hrs – Site visit
1130–1145hrs – Questions and Answers

There are only 20 slots for this field visit and the fees are as follows:

$25 for ASIS International (Singapore Chapter) paid-up members
$50 for ASIS International members and affiliated associations (ACFE, ISACA, (ISC)2 Singapore Chapters and TAPA Asia)

Honorary Chairman Message - Aug 2013

Dear Member,

The current Management Committee has been serving the members for 8 months. I am pleased to reaffirm our commitment to the members. The transformation delivered in 2012 is sustained this year and events are organised with higher quality and better attendance. Last year, there were 13 events organised and additional 5 events were supported with over 133 hours of education and networking opportunities offered.

Chapter's Q3 evening seminar and networking dinner was a resounding success. It was attended by over 70 participants and positive feedbacks were received. Lionel Tan from Rajah and Tann delivered a presentation on Personal Data Protection Act followed by Hector Martinez from EMC on Leading Edge with Big Data. By attendance and feedbacks, this is the best quarterly event we have organised so far.

The presentation slides are now available to all members at the following links:
a. Personal Data Protection Act Presentation Slides
b. Leading Edge with Big Data Presentation Slides

CPP Review course was completed yesterday with 10 attendees with attendees from Singapore and Indonesia. This follows the PSP course that was run successfully last month.

I would like to acknowledge our Q3 event sponsor, EMC. Please keep a look out for our next event soon.

Honorary Chairman Message - Jun 2013

Dear ASIS International and Singapore Chapter Members,

I am pleased to share with you on some recent updates:

1) Website v2.0
The Chapter has a new website with fresh look and design. This is a result from months of research, developing, fine-tuning and testing the new website. Information are easily accessible either from the top tabs or labels. There are several new features such as Google Calendar integration that allows members to subscribe to Chapter's calendar and is always updated with various events. Please have a look and let us know your experience.

2) LinkedIn Group
The recent situation with Haze prompted a need to facilitate members with a platform for discussion. It will also serve as additional channel to deliver Chapter announcements. Admission to the group will be limited to ASIS International assigned to Singapore and Singapore Chapter members. Members are encouraged to actively share relevant articles, start new discussion or participate in existing discussion. The group will be a good platform to post security-related job vacancies. Members should receive an invitation to join the group, act now to join 60 others members who are already in the group.

3) Graduate Diploma in Homeland Security and Counter Terrorism
In 2012, The Chapter signed a MoU with STEi to jointly deliver the program. The program is eligible for WDA funding and members will receive preferential fee. Other academic programs includes Master of Security Management from ECU and Professional Diploma in Security Management with SMF.

4) Chapter Membership
The Chapter operates financially independent from ASIS International. I encourage all ASIS International members to join Singapore Chapter. Chapter dues received is put into a good use for various educational, networking and outreach activities. At this point, ASIS International members in Singapore are enjoying preferential rates when attending events organised by ACFE Singapore Chapter, (ISC)2 Singapore Chapter, ISACA Singapore Chapter, DRI Singapore, TAPA Asia and others.

5) Certification Review Courses
Please spread the word around and this would be an excellent opportunity to prepare for CPP and PSP examination. Starting this year, The Chapter is extending the PSP review course to 3 days in order to cover additional area such as CPTED and BCM.
a. CPP review course, 26-29 Aug 2013

Since 1965, the Foundation has funded surveys, studies and research, as well as valued member projects like the IRC library and the 9/11 memorial garden at headquarters.

The work of the Foundation is supported solely by voluntary contributions. Today, it is supporting ASIS council initiatives such as the Matthew Simeone Award for Public Private Excellence and the new Military Liaison Council Certification Award in addition to facilitating several individual and chapter scholarship programs.

The work of the Foundation is supported solely by voluntary contributions. Chapter Newsletter 01/2013 | Submission by 25 May

As part of our communications outreach, ASIS International (Singapore Chapter) is committed to producing two Chapter Newsletters each year.

The first Chapter newsletter for 2013 will be published in Jun 13. Other than updating members on past and upcoming events, we will also be publishing security-related articles of interest as part of education and knowledge sharing.

Other than earning CPE credits for CPP/PSP/PCI holders, this would be a valuable platform to share your knowledge with fellow Chapter members and other security professionals. Your article should be submitted in word doc containing no more than 1,000 words, which can be accompanied with a photo.

Submissions close on Sat 25 May 13. We encourage all members to contribute actively towards "A more connected and learned Chapter".

Dear ASIS International and Singapore Chapter Members,

I am pleased to share with you on some updates in February:

1) Q1 Networking Dinner and CNY Celebration
Over 50 International and Singapore Chapter members attended the event at Food R'Us on 20 Feb. In addition, there were invited guests from Union of Security Employees (USE), ACFE Singapore Chapter, ISACA Singapore Chapter, (ISC)2 Singapore Chapter and SSAS. The event brought us together after the last event in November. 9 Singapore Chapter members walked away with prizes from the lucky draw.

2) Lecture Series
Last year, we tried out a new educational session - Webinar. As most of ASIS webinars are within U.S. timezone, we screened a recorded webinar followed by interactive discussion. Based on feedback from members, we modified the format into a live presentation/lecture by industry experts and practitioners. To kick-off the series, we have two presentations by Mr. Totti Karpela on 'Preventing impulsive and predatory acts of violence' and Mr. David Rule on 'Technical surveillance counter measures'. The session was well received with attendance of close to 20 members and affiliated associations members.

3) Changes in Management Council
Simon Lim and Mark Chee have decided to step down from the Management Committee. On behalf of the Management Committee, I would like to thank both Simon and Mark for their services to the Chapter. The Management Committee unanimously agreed to co-opt Howard Ho and Michael Chen to fill in the vacancies. Subsequent to the changes, Stefan Shih has assumed the position of Honorary Secretary while Michael Chen assumed the position of Honorary Asst. Secretary.

4) Membership
While we are in the membership renewal period, please do remember to renew your International and Singapore Chapter membership. Although It is optional to be a paid-up Singapore Chapter member, there are many benefits from signing to be one. The benefits include best rates to our own and affiliated association events. Every new/renewing Singapore Chapter member is entitled to an ASIS Singapore Chapter Golf Umbrella. From the latest update, we are now close to 80 paid-up Singapore Chapter members.

5) Upcoming events

Presentation #1:
Title: Preventing impulsive and predatory acts of violence; The basics of understanding the violent mind
Speaker: Totti Karpela
Synopsis:
In Singapore where commerce, trade and fiercely competitive business practice from the heart and soul of economic life, organizations and their employees are frequently challenged by the ugly side of human behaviour. It can manifest in the form of workplace violence, sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, blackmail, criminal extortion and unsavory debt-collecting practices; spreading worry and fear throughout an organization; affecting employee morale and productivity. Human behaviour - and therefore manmade threats -can be analyzed and even predicted in the form of a person's or group's motivations, capabilities and opportunities to carry out their intentions and so effective strategies can be developed to manage and prevent these situations.

Totti will look at the typical forms of threatening behaviour and the mean in which they may be communicated. He will impart advice on how such threats should be analyzed and interpreted and outline planning strategies for organizations to prevent, manage and investigate these incidents; factors which are often overlooked by corporate HR and psychologists.

Bio:
Mr. Karpela (ret.) police sergeant of the National Police of Finland with 24 years of experience from law enforcement. During his years of service Mr. Karpela worked as a unit supervisor for Helsinki Police Department's threat management service as well as hostage negotiator for the national SWAT team. He is still working as a subject matter expert for the European Council human rights project and for OSCE trainer for law enforcement organizations in conflict resolution issues. Since the mid-1990s Mr. Karpela has worked with threats related to intimate partner violence, organized crime, stalking, threats against government officials and others that have affected large, multi-national corporations. He has written several manuals and books and hundreds of articles about preventing violent crime, personal security and managing harassment cases. He is currently an executive board member for the Association of European Threat Assessment Professionals (AETAP) and an active member of ASIS Finland Chapter 210. Mr. Karpela lectures globally to audiences on the topic of prevention of violent crime.
